Troubleshoot a Whirlpool Heater Not Working

Bold_Look_of_Kohler.jpg

Refer to the following information for possible causes to diagnose a ProFlex or Experience whirlpool heater that is not working or the water in the whirlpool does not stay hot for long enough or cools too quickly.

Note: This troubleshooting information does not cover SoK, Riverbath or BodySpa products.

Ensure that the whirlpool is a Kohler whirlpool by locating the model number and serial number located on the motor / pump assembly. Refer to "Identifying Your Bath or Whirlpool Model" for additional information.

1. Heater is Not Plugged In

Identify the Issue - ProFlex Whirlpools

  • During installation, plugs may become disconnected or a power outlet was not available or installed.
  • Whirlpools without a heater have only one motor / pump plug-in connector. Whirlpools with a heater have two plug-in connectors.
  • If the motor / pump is running and water is circulating through the system, the red light in the heater control box will be on. If it is not on, the heater is not plugged in.

Identify the Issue - Experience Whirlpools

  • During installation, plugs may become disconnected or a power outlet was not available or installed.
  • All Experience whirlpools have a motor / pump plug-in connector and a heater plug-in connector. There are two plug-in connectors. Ensure both are plugged into the controller.

Recommended Action - Experience Whirlpools

  1. Disconnect the connectors for the heater and inspect the prongs on each plug. Make sure they are straight (Fig. 1).
  2. Reconnect and firmly re-seat the connectors into the controller connectors (Fig. 2)

(Fig. 2)

  1. Start the whirlpool and verify that the heater icon on the keypad is illuminated.
  2. For Experience whirlpools with Flexjets only, press the heater button on the keypad and the heater icon should illuminate. Then check the heater to determine if the light is on (Fig. 4).
  3. For Experience whirlpools with Flexjets and other features, rotate the outer ring of the keypad until the heater icon is blinking. Press the "OK" button on the keypad. The heater icon should illuminate solid green. Then check the heater to determine if the light is on (Fig. 5).

2. Water Temperature is Above 104 F or Below 60 F

  • The water in the bath is outside the minimum/maximum temperature range of the heater.

Identify the Issue

  1. With a thermometer, check the temperature of the water in the bath.
  2. The light on the heater is not on indicating that the heater is not working.

Recommended Action

  1. Add hot or cold water to the whirlpool to bring the temperature within the recommended operating range for the heater (104 F, 40 C to 60 F, 16 C). Start the whirlpool and reset the heater. The heater can be reset by pressing the large square under the RESET text on top of the heater. After the heater has been reset and the whirlpool has been started, the light should be showing on the heater. Note: See (Fig. 6) below for heater type, orientation, heater rating and reset location.
  2.  Reset the heater by pressing the red button on the heater. After the whirlpool has been started and the heater has been reset, the light should be showing on the heater.

(Fig. 6)

3. Low Water Flow Through the Flexjets

  • For Proflex or Experience whirlpools, one or more Flexjets may be closed off too much.

Identify the Issue

  1. With the whirlpool running, check the heater to determine if the heater light is on.
  2. If the light is not on, the heater is not operating. Proceed to recommended actions below.

Recommended Action

  1. For Proflex whirlpools, start the whirlpool and rotate the trim ring to full open on all of the Flexjets to determine if the heater light comes on. If the light comes on, the heater is functioning properly. The light should come on automatically.
  2. For Experience whirlpools, start the whirlpool and increase the speed to full using the keypad on the whirlpool. Rotate the trim ring to full open to determine if the heater light comes on. If the light comes on, the heater is functioning properly. The light should come on automatically.

Note: Although this product has been designed to accommodate all common water flow conditions, there may be unique low flow conditions that will prevent the heater from functioning properly. If all of the above actions do not fix the issue, replace the heater assembly.
