Correct Poor Toilet Rim Wash

Bold_Look_of_Kohler.jpg

Poor flush or rim wash may be caused by obstructed rim holes in the toilet. Follow these steps to rinse rim holes with a hard water deposit or lime dissolving cleaner.

  1. Shut off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to get rid of most of the water (Fig. 1).
  2. Ream out the rim holes. Use a paper clip or a finishing nail to clean difficult obstructions in the rim holes (Fig. 2).
  3. Use wet paper towels to block the rim holes and plumber's putty to keep the towel in place (Fig. 3).
  4. Pour a hard water deposit or lime dissolving cleaner into the rim inlet in the flush valve and let it sit in the rim chamber for 8 - 24 hours to dissolve the deposits. It is recommended to lift the flapper or canister and pour the cleaner directly into the flush valve hole (Fig. 4).
  5. After 8 - 24 hours, remove the towels and putty, then flush several times before using.

Likely causes:

  • During shipping, pieces of vitreous can shake loose and settle in the rim holes.
  • Hard water deposits can also restrict the water flow through the rim holes.
