Adjust the Amount of Water in a Toilet Tank

It is important for the tank to have the proper amount of water to ensure the toilet flushes properly.

KOHLER toilets have a water level indicator located on the flush valve or on the tank wall.  The water level is raised or lowered by adjusting the float on the fill valve.

First, identify the type of fill valve in your toilet. Then, the steps below to adjust the water level in your tank.

Older Style Fill Valve

1. Squeeze the Float Valve Adjustment Clip (metal C-shaped clip) on the float valve and slide it up or down the float rod to adjust the water to the desired level. A pair of pliers may assist in squeezing the clip.

  • Slide the clip up the float rod to raise the float and the water level
  • Slide the clip down the float rod to lower the float and the water level

2. Flush the toilet to verify the water level is at the marked water line in the tank.

3. Repeat Step 1 until the correct water level is achieved.

Newer Style Fill Valve

1. Starting with one full turn, turn the screw connected to the float arm to raise or lower the float. Turn by hand or with a Philips or Standard screwdriver.

  • Clockwise will increase the water level
  • Counter-clockwise will decrease the water level

2. Flush the toilet to verify the water level is at the marked water line.

3. Repeat Step 1 until the correct water level is achieved
